Sold in drugstores as the anti-dandruff shampoo “Nizoral”, Revita Shampoo, also contains ketoconazole and numerous other ingredients such as topical caffeine, that stimulate hair growth in a shampoo base. Ketoconazole mildly inhibits the binding of DHT to the hair follicle androgen receptor. Additionally it likely suppresses the localized autoimmune responses through its effects on specific cytokines that are related to dandruff and perifollicular inflammation (present in 98% of balding men).

There have been 2 studies published in the medical literature confirming that 2% Nizoral shampoo grows hair in balding men with continued usage.

1 study showed significant regrowth using ketoconazole foam on a daily basis over a period of 6 months.

It appears to manage scalp inflammation and reduces sebum levels confirming its antiandrogenic effect. Numerous anecdotal reports and a recent study would seem to indicate that the 1% over the counter version is also helpful for hair loss.

Directions: Use the 1 or 2% shampoo 2-3 times weekly. Nizoral cream can be used in the hairline or other thinning areas 2-3 times a week

Side Effects: Dry scalp and hair, if over used.
