The Best Singular Shampoo Ingredient for treating hair loss

It appears counter-intuitive that a shampoo ingredient, due to the fact that shampoos are lathered and rinsed out fairly quickly, would have any effect on hair loss. Published studies have however, identified several shampoos that are seemingly capable even if by themselves, of altering the course of Androgenetic Alopecia.

Ketoconazole Shampoos (Nizoral)

Pyrithione Zinc Shampoo (Head and Shoulders)

Coal Tar Shampoo (Neutrogena T Gel)

      Piroctone Olamine Shampoo

      New Dandruff Shampoo for Hairloss

Among these shampoos, by far the most effective identified to date are Piroctone Olamine based shampoos. As we featured in a prior update, Piroctone Olamine based dandruff shampoo significantly outperformed both Nizoral and head and Shoulders in its ability to reduce shedding, sebum production, and effected a reversal of the progressive miniaturization of the hair follicle seen in MPB (Androgenetic Alopecia).

Like Nizoral, Piroctone Olamine is an ingredient designed to treat dandruff. Its apparent indication for hair loss is considered an off label use. Unlike2% Nizoral, it does not require a prescription. To date it is not yet commercially available for use in the US, but is available in Europe and Latin America. Piroctone Olamine shampoos can be legally brought in or imported with no restrictions.

I personally use a Piroctone Olamine anti-dandruff shampoo made by Follicure, sold throughout Latin America. It is called Follicure “para Caspa,” (for dandruff). In addition to Piroctone Olamine, it contains conditioners that leave the hair shiny and manageable. It does not dry the hair out like Nizoral. On the bottle it specifically states “COTROLA LA CASPA Y DISMINUYE LA CAIDA DEL PELO”, which translated means; “controls dandruff and diminishes hair fall out.”

Like Nizoral shampoo, Piroctone Olamine shampoos only need to be used 2-3 times a week to benefit hair growth. What many do, myself included, is rotate Nizoral with Follicure para Caspa on alternating days. This gives you the full benefit of both.

One 350 ml bottle of Follicure para Caspa at a usage rate of 2-3 times a week will generally last about 9 months. It is important when using any shampoo for hair loss treatment, to leave it on after lathering for at least 5 minutes before rinsing. There is a published study showing that doing this significantly enhances their effectiveness in treating dandruff. The same no doubt holds true for hair loss.
