Androgenetic Alopecia or MPB as we know it is established to be a function of inflammation induced by DHT, that causes a progressive miniaturization of hair follicles resulting in thinning hair and eventual baldness. There are viable interventions, both pharmaceutical and natural that target both DHT and inflammation, that can in practically all cases, halt the progression of MPB, and in most cases facilitate some degree of regrowth.
The inflammation seen in MPB is gradual, and is termed peri-follicular inflammation. This often (not always), manifests as a tangible itching sensation in the pattern areas those experiencing hair loss.

Scalp burns typically cause an acute and pronounced inflammation that well exceeds in scope the peri-follicular inflammation seen in MPB, often resulting in permanent hair loss.

The following study demonstrated that topically applied Emu Oil was able to regenerate both skin and hair follicles that had been burned, while the control group exhibited no such effect. Again the inflammation from burn trauma to the hair follicle and skin is significantly more traumatic and pronounced than the peri-follicular inflammation seen in even the most severe cases of MPB.

Abstract

The goal of this study was to determine the effect of topical Emu oil on the healing of burn wounds and hair follicle restoration in superficial II-degree burns in the skin of Balb/c mice. Thirty-two male Balb/c mice with burns on the back of the neck were divided into two groups: The Emu oil group received topical Emu oil twice daily, whereas the control was left untreated. Skin biopsies were obtained on days 4, 7, 10, and 14 of the experiment. Then the specimens were viewed with Olympus SZX research microscope. The Emu oil treated burns were found to heal more slowly and inflammation lasted longer in this group. The number of hair follicles in the margins of the wounds increased through time in the Emu oil group compared to the control group. Also, the hair follicles in the Emu oil group were in several layers and seemed to be more active and mature. Moreover, Emu oil had a positive effect on fibrogenesis and synthesis of collagen. The findings indicate that although Emu oil delays the healing process, it has a positive effect on wound healing and it increases the number of hair follicles in the margins of the wound.

This study further underscores our longstanding recommendation for topical Emu Oil, as both an effective and cost effective hair loss intervention. The fact that Emu Oil can regenerate hair follicles even under burn conditions is impressive.

As you may know from our many prior updates on Emu Oil, Dr. Michael Holick of Boston University found topically applied Emu Oil reactivated dormant hair follicles, returning miniaturized follicles to their original size. These findings, along with its apparent firming, anti-aging effects on skin prompted Dr. Holick to apply for a patent, the details of which were published in the US patent registry 1998.

As mentioned in prior updates, it is recommended to use Emu Oil that has been low temperature processed and from Emus that have consumed a free range roaming diet to optimize its anti-inflammation, hence hair growth effects.

At MPB Research we source our low temperature processed and free range fed Emu Oil directly from Australia, that meets AGA (Australian Growers Association) standards. AGA standards for purity and quality than their American counterparts, the AEA (American Emu Association).
To use Emu Oil, simply apply a few drops to affected areas one or more times a day.   I personally apply it to my scalp before retiring, and wash my hair in the AM after working out. It is not at all necessary that you wash your hair after applying, as there are many who use it daily and wash their hair every few days. What is important is that you apply at least once a day or more however you choose to use it.
