For those of you who don’t already know, Proscar and Propecia are exactly the same drug. Proscar was approved in 1992 for the treatment of BPH, and Propecia, a reduced dose version was approved in 1998 by the FDA for hair loss treatment.

Proscar has 5 mg. finasteride per tablet, Propecia has 1 mg. finasteride per tablet, and in most cases, Propecia is actually more expensive than Proscar. You can dramatically cut your expenses for finasteride by using Proscar and splitting the 5 mg. tablet into 4-5 sections with a pill cutter available at any dollar store. In fact, the data on the half life of finasteride indicate that could actually use 1 mg. every other day and get virtually the same result with hair growth. Paying 65 or so dollars a month for 30 tabs of 1 mg. Propecia is a colossal waste of money.
