Our treatment protocols integrate and combined the recommendations of the top published researchers and doctors worldwide that specialize in treating hair loss.  In the absence of a singular treatment compound that is effective for everybody, all practitioners, without exception, recommend a combination of treatments to bring about optimal results.

Our treatment protocols list various compounds indicated by the top doctors worldwide and are followed by brief description in layman’s terms of the clinical basis for each recommendation.

Hair loss in younger men is primary a function of male hormones (androgens).  The current focus of treatment from the top practitioners worldwide emphasizes a topical and systemic neutralizing of dihydrotestosterone via 5-alpha-reductase inhibition.  It can also involve the inhibition of androgen binding at receptor sites, and the increasing of systemic levels of sex hormone binding globulin (SHBG).   Studies have shown that androgen related activity in the scalp of men with hair loss in their 20’s is more than double that of men with hair loss in their 50’s.  Because age related factors such as inflammation, immunology, and decreased microcapillary perfusion are not as pronounced in younger men, they typically enjoy a much better response to anti-androgenic treatments, compared to men over 45.

Primary Protocol

Super EPA/DHA                                                              Viviscal

Pantothenic Acid (B5)

Effective hair loss treatment for men over 45 takes into account DHT (dihydrotestosterone), to some degree but also emphasizes other age related factors such as inflammation, a systemic increase in estrogen, and decreased microcapillary perfusion (circulation to the hair follicle), that become increasingly more significant as one ages.

Studies have shown that androgen related activity in the scalp of men with hair loss in their 20’s is double that of men with hair loss in their 50’s.  “Senescent Thinning” is a clinical term that describes a diffuse and gradual hair loss that occurs in those older than 50 and is known to have different underlying causes than typical Male Pattern Baldness.  Indeed, the typical treatment response to finasteride (Proscar, Propecia) is much less favorable than that of younger males and conversely systemic growth hormone injections and occasionally testosterone replacement result in scalp hair regrowth in balding older men.

Women’s hair loss is in most cases a genetic predisposition to hair loss caused by an abnormal sensitivity to normal hormone levels (specifically androgens) or a natural reaction to abnormally elevated androgen (male hormone) levels.  The androgen to estrogen ratio can also shift towards favoring androgens immediately after pregnancy and during menopause.  It is during these times and during stress (which elevates androgens) that women often experience acute hair loss, clinically termed effluviums, which are typically androgenetic in nature.

The primary mechanism of treatment and regrowth in women essentially involves systemically normalizing the estrogen to androgen ratio, blockage of androgen action at follicle receptor sites, and the raising of blood levels of sex hormone binding globulin (SHBG).  Secondary mechanisms of treatment include the usage of hair growth stimulators, growth hormone releasing peptides, and the usage of agents that enhance microcapillary perfusion (circulation to the hair follicle).

The following primary treatment recommendations specifically emphasize the hormonal components of hair loss unique to women.  The adjunctive recommendations neutralize other contributing mechanisms to androgenetic hair loss, which become increasingly more significant with advancing age.  Better singular treatments are continually being researched, however, the most significant results are obtainable utilizing a combination approach which addresses a multiplicity of  established factors that contribute to hair loss.

Based on the preponderance of studies and anecdotal reports, we have omitted Rogaine 2 and 5% from our protocol.  It appears that Rogaine, despite its short term effectiveness in some patients almost invariably loses its effectiveness due to tolerance. The usual timeframe on tolerance to set in  is from 12 to 18 months. More importantly, it causes a tremendous amount of shedding in all patients upon stoppage.  Of real concern is that this shedding is typically above and beyond what one would have normally gained through any treatment response. This phenomena is clinically termed  loss of “minoxidil dependent hair”, and implies that  stopping minoxidil use may result in loss of hair that may have been otherwise unaffected by androgenetic alopecia (pattern loss). Stopping other treatments such as Propecia will result in a gradual regression to the pre-treatment state. With Minoxidil this loss is much more dramatic.   This seems to occur regardless of other treatments being  used to offset this process.   Any review of the medical literature will confirm its transient and marginal effectiveness at both 2 and 5 percent concentrations.  If you are currently using Rogaine you would be well advised to stay on it, however you will likely need to use increasingly higher concentrations to maintain any results. In fact there is a 12.5% version being made available by one doctor.  If you are currently using Rogaine and chose to get off it would be wise to gradually reduce your usage and substitute the Pyridine-N-Oxides (Dr. Proctor) to avoid the hair loss that invariably occurs with the cessation of Minoxidil treatment. Because of the similarity in their core technology, the Pyridine-N-Oxides appear unique in their ability to do this. The current thinking on Rogaine by several practitioners is that it is best avoided altogether.

NIZORAL SHAMPOO mildly inhibits the binding of DHT to the hair follicle androgen receptor.  Additionally it likely suppresses the localized autoimmune responses through its effects on specific cytokines that are related to dandruff and perifollicular inflammation (present in 98% of balding men).

There have been 2 studies published in the medical literature confirming that 2% Nizoral shampoo grows hair in balding men with continued usage.  It appears to cure scalp inflammation and reduces sebum levels confirming its antiandrogenic effect.  Numerous anecdotal reports and a recent study would seem to indicate that the 1% over the counter version is also helpful for hair loss.

Directions:  Shampoo daily or, 2 days on, 1 day off.

Side effects:  Dry scalp and hair.

NATURAL ESTROGEN – As women grow older and under periods of stress, their natural production of estrogen and progesterone goes down, resulting in increased cortisol, unpleasant menopausal symptoms, accelerated aging, and often hair loss.

Hormone replacement drugs are available by prescription, but new studies are exposing the inadequacies and dangerous side effects when these synthetic therapies are used for long periods.  A growing number of women are turning to plant-derived extracts as a natural alternative.

The latest funding to support the use of plant hormones comes from a six-month study assessing the effects of soy estrogen presented at the International Congress of Gynecology in Washington D.C.  Results indicated that 85% of female subjects reported a significant improvement in menopausal symptoms including hair loss, while 75% of them had lower cholesterol levels.  Brazilian researchers led the study attribute the positive health effects of certain plant combinations to the estrogen mimicking hormones they contain, called isoflavones.  The isoflavones unlike conventional estrogen treatments (Premarin, Provera) , caused no apparent swelling of the memory glands or endometrium.  Such changes are known to be associated with an increased risk of breast or uterine cancer.

Other new research shows that isoflavones protect against osteoporosis by preserving bone mineral density and bone mineral content and post-menopausal women.

A US patent was recently issued to a biotech firm for the use of soy isoflavones as a treatment for both male and female hair loss.

Natural Estrogen is a dietary supplement that provides standardized plant extracts to help relieve menopausal symptoms, while offering hormone-modulating effects that are essential for health maintenance in hair loss prevention in women over 40.

Directions:  One caplet twice daily.  Some women may need only one caplet daily.

     Side effects:  None.

DR. PROCTOR'S ADVANCED HAIR REGROWTH FORMULA- Contents a potent dose of  "natural" minoxidil (NANO), combined with SODases (Copper complexes like Folligen) and a natural 5-alpha-reductase inhibitor.  It simultaneously counters the autoimmune inflammatory effects and DHT components of the balding process, in addition to having a strong hair growth stimulating effect.  It can be used in conjunction with any shampoo.  It is the single most comprehensive hair growth product available today because it addresses so many facets of the balding process.  Many users consider it to be superior to his more costly and unstable prescription formula, and his less concentrated, lower cost version.

Directions:  8-10 drops on the thinning areas once or twice a day.

    Side effects: Scalp tingling.

PROPECIA (PROSCAR)- Rapidly reduces circulating levels of DHT, to the point of inhibiting the balding process.  Trials done by Merck thus far indicate that 65% of men on 1 mg. a day of Propecia will experience a 15% increase in the total number of hairs on their head.  Most subjects who grew no hair achieved an almost immediate stabilization of hair loss.  The latest data indicate that Propecia works best for two years, and then its effects gradually diminish.  Those on Propecia however, are significantly improved compared to those on the placibo.  Propecia appears to grow hair in both vertex and frontal areas. Keep in mind that nearly all of the existing studies on Propecia are industry sponsored, meaning the results and side effect incidence statistics are probably somewhat skewed in an optimistic direction.

Proscar is identical to Propecia, the active ingredient in both is finasteride.  Propecia contains 1 mg. of finasteride, Proscar contains 5 mg. of finasteride.  It is much more cost effective to obtain Proscar and quarter the tablets into 1.25 mg. of finasteride than it is to pay for Propecia.  The cost of both Propecia and Proscar are roughly the same, about 65 dollars for 30 tablets.  Prior to the approval of Propecia, Merck and Co. assured consumers that the active ingredient, Finasteride, was precisely and uniformly dispersed in each tablet of Proscar for those prostate patients who had concerns about side effects and wanted to take a reduced dosage.  It now appears that since Propecia is on the market, they have changed their tune.  If people knew they can simply section a Proscar tablet instead of paying the full price for Propecia it would have disastrous effects on company profits.  Don't allow yourself to be misled.

Side effects:  Loss of libido, penile impotence, gynocomastia (breast enlargement in males), reflex hyperandrogenecity (increased shedding, acne).  The incidence of sexual side effects is probably much higher than the 2% reported in the PDR.  If you are one of the people who are affected and therefore cannot take Propecia, there are more advanced herbal formulas that work much better than Saw Palmetto by itself, and appear to be side effect free.

SUPER MIRAFORTE with CHRYSIN -  Chrysin, a bioflavonoid, has been shown to restore youthful sex hormone profiles in men by inhibiting aromatase, an enzyme that converts male hormones (androgens) into estradiol, the strongest form of estrogen.

Excess estrogen in males past puberty has been conclusively linked to disorders that were traditionally considered to be “exclusively” androgen mediated.  It has been shown that both androgens and excess estrogen are contributing factors to not only hair loss, but prostate enlargement and prostate cancer as well.  A patent was recently issued to researchers in England for the use of aromatase inhibitors combined with antiandrogens for the treatment of male pattern balding.  Excess estrogen has also been implicated in a process known as “thymic involution”, or the age related shrinkage of the thymus gland, which disrupts immune synchronization, resulting in a cascade of autoimmune and inflammatory processes including arthritis and androgenetic hair loss.

Chrysin as a singular agent, has been shown in studies to be poorly absorbed.  Studies have also shown that when it is combined with piperine (a pepper extract), it is efficiently absorbed and utilized and its effects are comparable to Arimidex, an expensive, synthetic aromatase inhibitor.  Chrysin combined with piperine results in reductions of serum estrogen (estradiol) and increases in free testosterone to a ratio typically seen in 18 year old males.

Interestingly, the reductions of estrogen stabilized at these levels with continued usage.  This is significant because while excess estrogen greatly contributes to hair loss and prostate enlargement, in estrogen deficiency can contribute to hair loss, and is a noted side effect of the aggressive, antiestrogen therapies used in the treatment of advanced breast cancer, involving a combination of strong aromatase inhibitors and estrogen receptor blockers.

Finasteride (Proscar/Propecia) has been conclusively shown to increase both testosterone and estrogen while lowering serum levels of DHT.  This increase in estrogen not only limits its effectiveness in treating hair loss, but, creates side effects such as impotence, gyno(breast enlargement), increased body fat, and loss of libido.

Supra Miraforte with Chrysin is a pharmaceutical grade, herbal extract, combination that contains Chrysin, piperine, maca (Peruvian ginseng), Muira puama, Nettle Root Extract, Ginger Root, and Zinc monomethione.  This combination reduces excess estrogen, raises free testosterone, and potentiates the hair growth effects of 5-alpha-reductase inhibitors.

It also increases libido and reduces body fat, both potential problematic areas of concern for those using Propecia alone.

NATURAL PROSTATE FORMULA - An advanced herbal DHT, aromatase, and estrogen blocking formula.  This formula utilizes the CO2 extraction method on Saw Palmetto as opposed to the regular hexane extraction, yielding a pure more potent compound that has been shown to be more effective at inhibiting androgen binding than regular Saw Palmetto Extract, (52%, as opposed to 40%).

More importantly though, this formula contains a methanolic nettle root extract that is active in inhibiting estrogen binding to sex hormone binding globulin (SHBG).  What does this have to do with hair loss??  Through this binding activity researchers have shown in several tissue samples, including prostate and hair follicles, that estrogen is "capable of activating path ways normally considered androgen responsive."

It has been established in recent research that certain estrogen blockers grow hair, but the mechanism of action has not been fully understood.  Most researchers now concede that DHT is not the sole hormonal trigger of hair loss.  SHBG increases with age and with the presence of bound estrogen, can act like an additional androgen receptor.

Aromatase inhibitors have been studied closely and have shown promise in generating hair growth (Dr. Sheffield).  In addition to inhibiting the binding of SHBG, at least six constituents of the methanolic extract of nettle root inhibit aromatase reducing the conversion of androgens to estrogens.

In all studies involving affects on SHBG and aromatase inhibition, the methanolic extracts and not the ethanolic extracts were shown to be effective.  The ethanolic extracts were shown, in fact, to be inactive.

The Natural Prostate Formula uses methanolic extracts of stinging nettle root, in addition to a more advanced extract of Saw Palmetto, and Pygeum Extract (a mild 5-alpha-reductase inhibitor, and anti-inflammatory).

This synergestic formula is years ahead of regular Saw Palmetto/Pygeum and will provide many a side effect free option of dealing with all of the hormonal facets involved with hair loss, not just DHT.  The Natural Prostate Formula retails for only 38.00 dlls for a one month supply and is more advanced than any other overpriced herbal combination

available, many of which are sold on the Internet, none of which use the methanolic extracts of stinging nettle roots.  One such product even got an endorsement from a famous Doctor/Researcher, buyer beware.

Directions:  Take two capsules, one in the a.m., one in the p.m.

SUPER ABSORBABLE SOY ISOFLAVONES – Soy Isoflavone extracts have been shown to possess mild phytoestrogenic properties which can neutralize androgen mediated pathologies in the body.  Several biotech firms have applied for patents for oral soy extracts as a treatment and preventative agents for male and female pattern hair loss.

Soy extract prevents the hair loss effect of testosterone by inhibiting the binding of testosterone to the hair and scalp receptor. Soy extracts also raise systemic levels of sex hormone binding globulin(SHBG), and upregulate VEGF(vascular endothelium growth factor).  Oral soy extracts can be combined with other pharmaceutical treatments for hair loss without adversely affecting the beneficial and positive effects of such treatments.

In a recently granted patent for oral soy extract as a treatment for MPB, a dosage of 400 to 450 mg. was recommended.  Mega Soy Extract is the most potent and concentrated soy extract commercially available.  Each capsule provides 135 mg. of highly concentrated isoflavones, including genestein, diadzein, and glyciten.  For the treatment or prevention of hair loss, 3 capsules daily, and divided doses is suggested.

FOLLIGEN -  A topical hair regrowth treatment designed by Dr. Loren Pickart.  Folligen is also useful in reducing scalp irritation caused by other hair growth products such as Rogaine and Retin A.

Folligen contains a high concentration of copper peptide complexes plus Saw palmetto oil.  It strongly stimulates hair growth in studies and trials done thus far.  The active copper-peptide complex in Folligen has also been shown to stimulate skin repair and posses anti-inflammatory properties.  Folligen is an extension of his Tricomin based work but uses a more sophisticated method to renew the scalp and follicles.  Research has shown that optimal regeneration is obtained only when there are multiple biological signals for renewal.  Folligen contains copper ions plus a mixture of numerous different peptide fragments that are generated by natural proteolytic enzymes.  This produces numerous copper peptide complexes naturally to facilitate the hairs regenerative and regrowth processes.

Will Brink, a noted Life Extension writer, has recommended a combination of Folligen, Propecia and Nizoral shampoo for optimal regrowth.

Compare Folligen lotion at $17.95 and Folligen Therapy Spray for $33.95 to Tricomin Therapy Spray sold by Procyte for $48.00.

Tricomin is a product based on Dr. Pickart's earlier work, and against his admonitions contains alcohol and blue dyes which can compromise its effectiveness. Dr. Pickart considers Folligen, due to minor modifications, superior to Tricomin.

Directions:  Apply a small amount to affected areas at bedtime.  No side effects.

EMU OIL - A product of nature dating back thousands of years  to Australia where the Aborigines of the outback use it as a natural healing remedy for dermatological and inflammatory disorders.  Modern day research shows that emu oil contains two exceptional active ingredients that enable it to be used as an effective topical pharmaceutical.  The Linolenic acid inherently contained in the oil provides relief from sore muscles and joint pain while the Oleic acid provides a local anti-inflammatory effect.  Emu Oil has been shown to be a 5-alpha-reductase inhibitor that also thickens dermis and enlarges hair follicles in all known alopecia conditions, including androgenetic.  Dr Holick of Boston University, found that it “awakened 80% of dormant hair follicles”. It has also been shown to stimulate melanogenesis providing potential for the treatment of greying hair as well as hair loss.  Emu Oil penetrates the skin better than any cosmetic ingredient known to date, and this is due to its non-phosphorous composition.  It can be used by itself, or with any topical hair growth or skin moisturizing compounds, enhancing their effectiveness.

Directions:  Massage a few drops into affected areas in the PM prior to retiring.

DR. PROCTOR'S HAIR REGROWTH SHAMPOO-  Includes an abundant supply of the most potent hair regrowth stimulator available - NANO (Pyridine-N-Oxide) also known as "natural minoxidil".  The Pyridine-N-Oxides have been shown to be more potent than Rogaine in stimulating hair growth and do not cause dramatic shedding upon cessation of usage.

Directions:  Use 2-4 times a week, preferably alternating with 2% Nizoral shampoo.

     Side effects:  A "tingling" sensation.

INDOLE-3-CARBINOL-  Scientists have isolated Indole-3-Carbinol and are making it available to the supplement market for the first time at an affordable price.  Indole-3-Carbinol was part of a hair loss treatment patent recently issued to a California bio-tech firm.  In regards to hair loss Indole-3-carbinol has been shown to increase the conversion of estradiol to “weaker” (20 HE) estrogen.  A 50% reduction is typically achieved in one week.  Estradiol has been implicated in both male and female pattern balding, along with certain androgens, (DHT, androstendione, DHEA).  It appears that the weaker form of estrogen may have a prophylactic effect on hair loss, while estradiol is a contributing factor.  Indole-3-Carbinol also inhibits breast cancer cells better than tamoxifen under laboratory conditions.  Additionally it protects against dioxin, an environmental toxin, and provides antioxidant protection.

MEGA GREEN TEA EXTRACT  has been shown in several studies to raise levels of sex hormone binding globulin (SHBG), and to be a potent inhibitor of 5-alpha-reductase type I, the isozyme that converts testosterone into DHT in skin.  Propecia (Proscar) inhibits 5-alpha-reductase type II, which is located primarily in the prostate gland, and is responsible for the amount of DHT in serum circulation. It is also thought to have use as an androgen receptor blocker.  Combining Green Tea Extract with Propecia (Proscar) should increase its effectiveness, and provide numerous additional health benefits.

Directions:  One capsule with heaviest meal of the day.  Use 95% Extract, with at least 120 mg. of Epigallocatechin gallate, the strongest concentrate commercially available.  It was this ingredient that was shown to have 5-alpha-reductase inhibitor properties.

Side effects:  Slightly stimulating, strong anti-cancer effects, multiple other benefits, powerful broad spectrum antioxidant.

GINKGO BILOBA EXTRACT-  In addition to its well documented cognitive enhancing effects, it appears to have vascular benefits that are likely beneficial to those with hair loss.  This is specifically because ginkgo has been shown to protect small blood vessels and micro capillaries against loss of tone and fragility.  Because DHT mediated inflammation to the follicle blood supply is a major factor in male pattern balding and their types of hair loss, it is likely to be beneficial.  Ginkgo Biloba extract has also been shown to be a mild 5-alpha-reductase inhibitor. There is one study in rats showing a significant hair growth effect with oral usage.

Directions:  One 120 mg. capsule in the AM.  Use only 24% ginkgo extract (6% terpene lactone).

Side effects:  Cognitive enhancement, cardiovascular benefits and other benefits.

ROOT FOOD -   Healthy hair needs proper nutrients.  Root Food is a cysteine and taurine based hair vitamin designed by Life Extension scientists, Durk Pearson and Sandy Shaw.  They make their formulations available only through organizations that meet their exacting criteria for dissemination of truthful and objective scientific information.  MPB Research is honored to be one of the few organizations able to distribute their products.

Although cysteine won't by itself usually grow hair, (although some people report regrowth at very high doses), it does speed up hair growth and increase and increase hair shaft diameter, literally resulting in fuller hair.  It is often reported that cysteine results in longer hair growth.  Maximum length of hair is generally genetically programmed, however, with cysteine it would appear that this program gets overridden and much longer hair growth is possible for those so inclined.  It also provides potent antioxidant protection to the hair follicle.  Some people use N-acetyl-cysteine topically for this purpose, and report hair regrowth. Taurine has been studied as having hair regrowth properties due to its unique abillity to prevent ridgidification of th hair follicle and the aging of the pilosebaceous unit.

One of the more interesting things is the large amount of vitamin B-2 in the recommended daily dose.  At physiological achievable concentrations B-2 acts as a 5 alpha-reductase inhibitor!.  A daily dose of Root Food contains 120 mg. of B-2.  It's not much point in using anymore than that because the solubility of B-2 is limited in your got and you can only absorb so much.  There is a Japanese study in the medical literature showing that riboflavin-vitamin B-2, is particularly effective as a 5-alpha-reductase inhibitor.

Root Food also contains a nutrient inositol which is a grow factor and essential for the Keratinocyte cells which line your hair follicles and produce hair.  Root Food also has other vitamins that are needed for your hair to grow properly including folic acid plus the amino acid taurine.  Also included are the antioxidant vitamin E, large amounts of vitamin C, and selenium, which are important for proper hair function.

Root Food provides optimal levels nutrients for hair to be its healthiest, and doubles as a potent antioxidant supplement for general daily use.

Directions:  Take 4 capsules a day in divided doses.

GRAPE SEED SKIN EXTRACT WITH RESVERATROL  -  Proanthocyanidins are among nature's most potent antioxidants.  They have been strongly recommended by numerous avant-garde practitioners as an internal "anti-wrinkle" therapy, and are thought to possess some properties that would make them beneficial for hair growth as well.  many people are claiming positive results from using Grape Seed Skin Extract topically.  Theoretically this makes a lot of sense.  In addition to its numerous other benefits, Grape Seed Skin Extract has been shown to bind to collagen fibers, increasing elasticity and flexibility in muscles, tendons, ligaments, and skin.  Most significantly, for hair, it acts as a smooth muscle relaxant in blood vessels and microcapillarys, possibly preventing or offsetting damage to the hair follicle blood supply. A patent was issued in Japan for grape seed extract as a hair regrowth compound. Oral usage of Red Wine Extract, in which resveratrol is the active ingredient, has been reported to grow hair and stop hair loss in human subjects by researchers at L'Oreal.

Directions:  Take 100-200 mg. a day.

BILBERRY EXTRACT -  One established factor in hair loss is the age related , breakdown of the inflammation induced microcapillary circulation around the hair follicles, Bilberry Extracts have been shown to improve microcapillary circulation, and strengthen collagen throughout the body, and are commonly prescribed therapy for macular degeneration.  The most effective Bilberry Extracts contain a standardized 25 % anthocyanidin bilberry extract.  Directions: Take 100 mg. a day.

NATURAL GH FORMULA – Growth Hormone (GH) has been shown to grow scalp hair (a 30% increase), reduce body fat, increase muscle mass and skin thickness, and improve immune function.  GH also stimulates the growth of organs that shrink with age, the heart, liver, spleen, kidneys, thymus, and thyroid.

The most effective way of boosting GH blood levels in regular injections.  While the cost of synthetic GH injections for anti-aging purposes is very high, it is now available from various doctors in North America.  For information on how to access these doctors, call us at 1-888-577-HAIR(4247).

For many years now, scientists have been exploring the ability of high doses of nutrients to restore GH to younger levels.  It has been shown that while GH is “adequately” produced from the pituitary, its secretion is down regulated with age.  However, scientist have found that certain amino acids and vitamins can stimulate the natural release of GH from the pituitary.

MPB Research offers a comprehensive formula to promote GH release that includes every nutrient discussed in the book.  Grow Young with GH.

The principle behind the use of multiple growth hormone releasing compounds is called “stacking”.  The principle behind this practice is that since many of the compounds operate to stimulate GH release by different mechanisms, taking them together will cause a larger release effect.  The doses of each can be made smaller than normally used with fewer consequent effects.

L-LYSINE – Studies involving the adminstration of L-Lysine to those with hair loss showed a remarkable increase in scalp hair growth.

Bio Sciences Ltd., in English bio-tech firm was recently issued a patent for the use of oral l-Lysine in combination with either topical minoxidil or Propecia as separate “hair growth kits.”

According to the data they presented, the simple addition of L-Lysine to either compound dramatically improved the efficacy of both.

L-Lysine is typically administered in a daily dose of 500 – 1500 mg., in the form of a 500 mg. dose administered once, twice, or three times a day.

ZINC -  Zinc is an established 5-alpha-reductase inhibitor and oral treatment for acne, an androgen mediated disorder.  Zinc deficiency, though rare, will reliably cause some degree of hair loss.

Zinc is often taken with B-6 to potentiate its 5-alpha-reductase inhibiting properties.  We strongly recommend that Pyridoxal, not Pyridoxine be used for maximum benefit.  Although some use zinc sulphate topically as a treatment, this is generally contraindicated unless the formula also contains some copper peptides, (Dr. Pickart).  Although Zinc sulphate by itself or perhaps with Azelaic may inhibit 5-alpha-reductase, without copper peptides it could leave the hair follicles significantly more vulnerable to inflammation.

     Directions:  30-50 mg. daily.

MEGA GLA -  Gamma-Linolenic-Acid (GLA) has been shown in studies to:

     * Inhibit 5-alpha-reductase

     * Cause a vasodilation of vessels and capillarys

     * Cause a reduction in inflammation and autoimmune dysfunction

     * Eliminate same common skin disorders, such as eczema

Directions:  1,000-1,500 mg., Borage seed, or Evening Primrose Oil.

EPA'S-FISH OIL -  EPA and DHA (eicosapentaeionic acid and decohexaenoic acid) have been shown to improve cholesterol profiles, and alleviate many forms of chronic inflammation, inflammation being a major factor in hair loss.  By themselves they wouldn't produce any ascertainable effects on hair regrowth, (but will improve texture and shine), but in addition to numerous other health benefits, they may help potentiate the effects of other anti-inflammatory hair regrowth compounds.  Dr. Inabi noted in his epidemiological study of baldness in Japan, that in addition to drinking large amounts of green tea, the non-balding rural Japanese ate a diet high in fish and Omega 3 fatty acids, while their balding urban counterparts primarily consumed western forms of fats (hydrogenated, red meat, fast food, etc..)

Directions:  1,000-3,000 mg. daily, free fatty acid form.

VIVISCAL -  Viviscal is an outgrowth of  the compound Vivida (Imedeen) which is an oral treatment for wrinkled and sun damaged skin.  The active ingredient in both Viviscal and Vivida is a fish cartilage extract of deep water Pacific origin that has been reliably shown to thicken epidermis and cure helioinflammation (sun damage) in skin resulting in a reversal of age related dermal thinning and collagen breakdown.  Viviscal is only slightly different from Vivida in that it has been compounded with a higher ratio of colloidal silicon giving the active ingredient a higher binding affinity for the hair follicles.  It has been shown to have profound anti inflammatory effects on the hair follicle itself, and thicken epidermis in the scalp which naturally thins with aging and androgenetic alopecia.  It is only one of two products, 2% Nizoral Shampoo being the other, that has had its effects on scalp inflammation (peri-follicular inflammation) evaluated in addition to the usual hair count analysis.  This effect was confirmed via punch biopsy.  The studies done show Viviscal typically produces a 38% increase in existing hair counts over a period of 6-8 months.  There are 5 published studies, in the medical literature confirming this effect.  Although the first 3 studies were not considered objective as they were sponsored by the proprietor of the product, Dr. Lassus, there has subsequently been 2 independent studies published confirming his original results.  Viviscal has recently been endorsed by a major super model, Natane, who claimed it stopped her hair fallout and enabled her to grow longer than before.  Although somewhat expensive, it has a loyal, almost fanatical European customer base.

Directions:  Take two tablets on an empty stomach for 6-8 months, thereafter, a maintenance dose of 1 tablet daily.  No side effects.  Side benefits:  Improved skin elasticity and thickness.
