Does Taurine Help Hair Growth? What the Research Shows
Short answer: Taurine helped isolated human hair follicles survive in a laboratory experiment. A later human trial found better photographic improvement with a taurine-containing blend added to hair-loss treatment. The blend contained several ingredients, so taurine’s individual contribution remains unknown. Research on anxiety and depression discussed below comes from mice.
What Happened When Human Hair Follicles Were Given Taurine?
In a 2006 study, researchers at L’Oréal grew isolated human hair follicles in culture. They asked three concrete questions: could follicles absorb taurine, did it help them survive, and could it protect them against TGF-beta1—a signalling protein that inhibited hair growth in this laboratory model?
Taurine was taken up by the hair bulb, outer root sheath and surrounding connective-tissue sheath. It promoted follicle survival and protected against the harmful effects of TGF-beta1.
The taurine was supplied directly in the culture medium. The experiment did not test swallowing a capsule, reversing scalp fibrosis or regrowing hair on a person. Read the follicle study in the International Journal of Cosmetic Science.
Has a Taurine-Containing Supplement Been Tested in People?
A 2023 randomized study enrolled 83 adults with pattern hair loss or chronic telogen effluvium. For 12 weeks, 48 received a supplement alongside their assigned hair-loss treatment; 35 received treatment alone. The supplement combined taurine with marine collagen, cysteine, methionine, iron and selenium.
An assessor unaware of treatment allocation rated standardized photographs. Half the supplement group achieved a global improvement score of at least +2, compared with 23% of the treatment-only group. Average scores were 1.67 versus 0.66 on a scale from −3 to +3.
This is evidence about an added multi-ingredient formulation, not taurine alone. Treatments varied between participants, there was no placebo supplement, and the trial lasted three months. The authors were affiliated with the company marketing the product. The photographic scores should not be read as percentage increases in hair count.
What Did Taurine Change in Mouse Studies of Stress and Mood?
A 2020 study exposed male mice to repeated restraint stress over 28 days. Mice given oral taurine performed better on tests used to assess anxiety-like behaviour, memory and depression-like behaviour. Researchers also found less oxidative stress and inflammation in the hippocampus, a brain region involved in memory and stress responses.
A separate 2022 study of chronic social stress used taurine injections for ten days. Taurine partly improved social avoidance and reduced immobility in a behavioural test, while protecting the branching structures and small spines through which cortical neurons communicate. It did not improve sucrose preference, another outcome measured in that experiment.
The two studies point toward effects on stress-related behaviour and brain-cell structure, but they used different stress models and delivery methods. Neither tested anxiety or depression treatment in people, and neither measured hair regrowth.
How Does This Connect With L’Oréal’s Hair Supplement?
The follicle experiment helps explain the interest in taurine as a hair-formula ingredient. It is a different kind of evidence from testing a finished supplement in volunteers. Our review of L’Oréal’s Innéov hair supplement looks at the combination formula and its reported study separately.
For ingredient information, see Taurine in our shop. This single-ingredient product is not the multi-ingredient formula tested in the 2023 trial; the laboratory and mouse experiments do not establish an oral treatment dose for hair loss or mood disorders.
