Emerging Model for Androgenetic Alopecia

      Androgenetic Alopecia (AGA, MPB) begins when DHT causes the hair follicle to be read as a “foreign body”. Your immune system then gradually, over time, rejects the hair follicle, resulting in peri-follicular inflammation and eventual fibrosis. The main damage in pattern hair loss is predominantly inflammation mediated. Damage to the lining of blood vessels, which produces hair growth factors, ensures the progression of the balding process. Traditional, and more recently developed, hair growth stimulants specifically target these blood vessel lining produced hair growth factors.

Hormonal Mechanisms:

      Castration, reduction of DHT levels, and androgen receptor antagonism, all, to varying degrees block the progression of balding and hair loss. However, women and castrated males have other sources of androgens and can still experience pattern loss.

Inflammatory/Immunological Mechanisms:

      On a cellular level, AGA resembles organ rejection. A greater number of immune system cells cluster around the base of the scalp hair follicle. 

• Interestingly, organ rejection drugs such as cyclosporin treat balding better than anti-androgens, but they are impractical for sustained usage. Hair Follicle Antibodies are evident in the majority of those with pattern hair loss.

      Rogaine (Minoxidil), and several other compounds mimic hair growth factors (nitric oxide radical, etc.) generated by blood vessel linings. In atherosclerosis, and the chronic inflammation seen in MPB, production of these hair growth factors precipitously decline. Atherosclerosis is associated epidemiologically with senescent or age related hair loss. 

       An appropriate therapeutic target for hair growth is the nitric oxide/superoxide system.

Although components of his topical formulation and shampoo share some of the core technology of Rogaine, (Minoxidil), they are far more potent, and don’t produce the dramatic shedding upon cessation of usage as is often the case with Rogaine.
