What Did a Minoxidil–Emu Oil Study Find?
Short answer: After 30 days in rats, 96% of follicles were in the growth phase with an experimental minoxidil–emu oil foam, compared with 70% using a marketed minoxidil solution. The experiment tested the complete foam formulation; it did not isolate emu oil’s contribution.
What Was Different About the Experimental Foam?
The researchers screened 17 formulations before choosing a stable foam containing minoxidil, emu oil, glycerin, lactic acid and emulsifiers. They applied treatments to shaved female Wistar rats for 30 days. Read the published study.
A formulation is the whole delivery system surrounding an active ingredient. Changing that system raises questions about stability, release and distribution, as well as the response of the target tissue.
How Many Follicles Were in the Growth Phase?
At day 30, the reported percentages of follicles in anagen, the active growth phase, were:

Total follicle density was similar across groups. These percentages describe the follicles’ cycle stages; 96% does not mean 96% more hair or a 96% success rate in patients.
Can Emu Oil Alone Explain the Difference?
The investigators did not compare otherwise identical minoxidil foams with and without emu oil, so its independent contribution remains unresolved. Their laboratory release test used a cellulose-acetate membrane, not human scalp. Read the full methods and results.
The study therefore supports further investigation of that foam. It does not show that adding emu oil to an existing minoxidil product will reproduce the result.
